An ANU Pathway Diploma may be an eligible route if your qualification meets the applicable entry requirements and your selection rank falls within 70–79.99. The Australian National University also lists additional entry routes, including a graded AQF Certificate IV and specified senior secondary qualifications accompanied by SAT results. Students with a selection rank of 80 or above should apply for a Bachelor degree rather than commence a Pathway Diploma.
How your qualification relates to selection rank
Selection rank, or SR, provides a common reference for assessing different qualifications. A minimum SR of 70 does not mean every applicant needs a raw score of 70: the corresponding result depends on the qualification and its scoring system.
The following examples correspond to the Diploma threshold of SR 70 in ANU’s qualification equivalency information.
| Qualification | Result corresponding to SR 70 |
|---|---|
| Gao-Kao — Shanghai, out of 660 | 446 |
| Gao-Kao — Hainan, out of 900 | 608 |
| Gao-Kao — other, out of 750 | 506 |
| HKDSE | 11 |
| AISSC | 10.5 |
| ISC India | 77 |
| IB — Australian schools, November 2022 onwards | 26.75 |
| IB — overseas, or Australian schools before November 2022 | 27 |
| GCE A-Levels — best three | 10 |
| GCE A-Levels — best four | 12 |
| SAT | 1090 |
| ACT | 20 |
| Singapore A-Levels | 6 |
| STPM — best three | 6 |
| STPM — best four | 5 |
| UEC | 24 |
This is a partial equivalency table. A qualification missing from it is not, by that absence alone, ineligible. The qualification name, awarding system, result and applicable assessment category all matter.
For Vietnam’s BTNPTTH, the supplied ANU table records “N/A*” for Diploma entry. That entry does not provide a usable score threshold or enough information to establish eligibility through that qualification.
Additional qualifications can support Diploma entry
ANU lists two additional qualification routes for Diploma entry:
- Graded AQF Certificate IV.
- General Secondary Education Certificate — Tawjihi / Shahadat Al-Thanawaya Al-aama — with SAT results.
For the latter route, the stated academic requirements are an average of 80% and an SAT score of at least 1090. ANU identifies senior secondary applicants from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait among the intended applicant groups.
The Work and Life Experience Scheme, formerly Special Adult Entry, is another listed route. The available information does not specify its detailed assessment criteria, so eligibility through that scheme cannot be determined here.
Predicted results are accepted where ANU already accepts them for Bachelor entry. ANU also lists predicted results for the Tawjihi / Shahadat Al-Thanawaya Al-aama Diploma route, subject to its stated academic and SAT requirements.
Academic eligibility is only part of the assessment
The Pathway Diplomas have no subject prerequisites for Diploma entry, and adjustment factors do not apply. English language requirements still need to be met.
Direct entry requires IELTS 6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0, or an equivalent result. This is the same English requirement as undergraduate entry.
Although the Diploma is a qualification in its own right, it cannot be commenced with a standalone one-year study intention. It must be packaged with a Bachelor degree, and financial capacity must cover the Diploma-plus-Bachelor sequence.
Study is in person at ANU’s Acton Campus in Canberra. There is no remote option, and the current intake is Semester 1 only.
Bachelor progression depends on your Diploma results
Each ANU Pathway Diploma is an AQF Level 5 qualification completed over 12 months of full-time study. It can lead to an aligned Bachelor degree with one year, or 48 units, of credit, subject to the relevant progression requirements.
| Pathway Diploma | Aligned Bachelor degree | Required Diploma GPA |
|---|---|---|
| Diploma of Business and Economics | Bachelor of Accounting; Bachelor of Business Administration; Bachelor of Commerce; Bachelor of Economics; Bachelor of Finance | 4.0 |
| Diploma of Computing | Bachelor of Computing | 4.0 |
| Diploma of Politics and International Relations | Bachelor of Asian Studies | 4.0 |
| Diploma of Politics and International Relations | Bachelor of International Relations; Bachelor of International Security Studies; Bachelor of Political Science; Bachelor of Public Policy | 4.6 |
ANU’s Diploma GPA conversion maps a GPA of 4.0 to SR 80 and a GPA of 4.6 to SR 85. These are progression measures based on Diploma performance; they serve a different purpose from the qualification results used to assess initial Diploma entry.
A student may apply for a non-aligned Bachelor after the Diploma. That application is assessed on the basis of one year of undergraduate study at ANU, with credit considered case by case. The full year of credit is not guaranteed when changing programs.
What to establish for your own qualification
An individual eligibility assessment needs the following details:
- Your exact qualification and awarding system.
- Your final or predicted results.
- The applicable qualification-to-SR equivalency.
- Your English language results.
- Your intended Diploma and aligned Bachelor.
- Your ability to undertake the packaged study sequence.
The key distinction is between having an eligible qualification, meeting the applicable entry requirements and receiving an admission decision. The information above helps establish the first two; it does not promise an offer for an individual applicant.
