UHIP: Coverage, Visit Steps, and Reimbursement Notes for International Students

Learn what UHIP covers, how to see a doctor, and key reimbursement rules to avoid high medical costs in Ontario.

What UHIP Covers

The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is a mandatory health insurance plan for international students in Ontario. It provides coverage for a range of medically necessary services, including doctor visits, hospital care, diagnostic tests, and emergency services. UHIP is designed to cover most of the costs that would otherwise be paid out of pocket, but it does not cover all medical expenses. Some services, such as prescription drugs, dental care, and physiotherapy, may not be covered under the basic plan and may require additional insurance.

Steps to See a Doctor Under UHIP

When you need medical care, you should first find a doctor or clinic that accepts UHIP. You can usually visit a walk-in clinic or a campus health center. At the time of your visit, present your UHIP card and a valid study permit. The clinic will bill UHIP directly for covered services, so you may not have to pay upfront. However, you should always confirm with the clinic that they accept UHIP before receiving treatment.

For emergency care, go to the nearest hospital emergency room. UHIP covers emergency hospital services, but you may be asked to pay for certain services upfront and then submit a claim for reimbursement.

Reimbursement and Cost-Saving Tips

If you pay for a covered service out of pocket, you need to keep all receipts and medical reports. You can then submit a claim to UHIP for reimbursement. Make sure to fill out the claim form correctly and attach all required documents. Submit your claim within the specified time limit to avoid losing your reimbursement.

To avoid high medical costs, always check whether a service is covered before you receive it. If you are unsure, contact the UHIP administrator at your university. Also, consider purchasing supplemental insurance to cover services not included in UHIP, such as dental care or prescription drugs.

By understanding your coverage and following the proper steps, you can minimize your out-of-pocket expenses and focus on your studies.
